Ahh, fall! Finally the crisp weather has arrived in the morning and evening and we (hopefully) said good-bye to the humidity until next summer here in the southeast. I always look forward to a seasonal change and with this round comes a flurry of outdoor activities. Pumpkin patches, apple picking, fall festivals, hayrides, and more, oh my!

But then the question is, what do I wear when the weather is in between seasons? Today we’ll walk through three outfit ideas plus a hat and a pair of shoes to get you pumpkin patch ready!

Start with a Base

In every outfit, I have on the same jeans and white t-shirt as a base and I layered on top of that. It’s still fairly toasty during the day in the southeast where I live so I like to be able to remove a layer or two in case I overheat. This white t-shirt from Amazon is a great basic for your closet and is a thicker material so you don’t need yet another layer underneath. Add a pair of jeans that you love and you’re main layer is done! I am wearing the mid-rise skinny jean in petite sizing from Banana Republic.

This year I purchased a pair of wedge sneakers as an alternative for a casual feel and these do double duty! The give me a little bit of height and they’re comfortable to walk around outside on uneven surfaces. I picked my pair of Steve Madden’s up at the beginning of the season from DSW, but there are lots of excellent options to choose from like here, here, and here. The wedge in my pair is more of a kitten heel height while other designs have a higher wedge that isn’t as comfortable for my ankles or the balls of my feet. I recommend trying a few pairs on to see what heel height feels ideal for you.

I also included this hat from Amazon in every outfit option. It’s the same company that made the summer straw hat I raved about earlier this year. There are so many great color choices and I am considering another one in a tan color. This hat is one size fits all and can be adjusted with a ribbon on the inside to tighten it depending on your head size.

The hat is comfortable and easy to wear all day. A definite recommendation for fall and winter!

Utility Jacket – A Light Layer

For the first look, I added only a green utility jacket to give a little bit of warmth. This jacket comes in petite sizes as well and it is from Banana Republic. The green color is a nice neutral that goes with everything. Plus, there are a lot of pockets so I don’t need to carry a purse while I am trying to hold onto my kids or whatever they hand me to place in my pockets. Anyone else endlessly carrying random items?!

Need a little more warmth? Try adding a fleece or down vest over your light utility jacket.

Add a Vest

In the second round, I added a button down shirt and a vest to the look. A vest is a common layering item for me in the cooler months. I find it especially useful when the sun is shining but I need a little extra hug of warmth. Plus vests can be layered over t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, or even jackets (like the utility jacket above). I also highly recommend using a vest to layer over a denim jacket. My vest is from Athleta from a prior season but I have linked another one from Amazon here that is similar.

Sweater Weather

And now we move on to the sweater I have been wearing on repeat this fall, this Vanessa sweater from J.Crew Factory (or its cousin from J.Crew that Meghan Markle wore to Wimbledon). Quick note is that I did purchase the sweater one size down from my usual because I found the fit ran a little big.

Seriously, if you follow me on Instagram then you know I have been wearing it a lot lately. And I suspect it will be on repeat for a while. It is a sweater blazer or almost like a sweater coat of sorts so it is a little heavier, has pockets, and oh so flattering and goes with everything. Convinced yet?

To complete the look, I added a chambray shirt and the sweater for a little more warmth.

All looks were created as an option when it isn’t quite cool enough for a jacket but still a little chilly for a t-shirt. The in between seasons can be challenging, plus the temperature can adjust quite a bit from morning to afternoon. Layers are your friend for this time of year!
