April showers bring May flowers!
This trench coat was a big investment piece for me three years ago that I had been saving up to purchase. I’m not really one for going out in the rain if I don’t have to, but it is often necessary and holding an umbrella while handling two small kids and carrying all the bags and things just wasn’t happening.
I was in love the minute the coat arrived!
I knew I wanted to look at Burberry to see what I could find as their rain/trench coats are the best of the best. As I was thinking about it and starting to research, I saw this blog post from Juliet Angus about airplane travel outfits. The beautiful trench she was wearing did not have a hood (which was a must on my list), but the Balmoral trench in the extra finds scrolling option at the bottom was just right. The link brought me over to NET-A-PORTER and I opted for the Sisal color (it also came in Black).
The Perfect Fit
I was in love the minute the coat arrived and I tried it on to feel the magic! The material is machine washable (fantastic news!), the pockets are deep, the hood is the perfect large size and can be tightened with elastic drawstrings that are thoughtfully hidden under a flap, the hood is detachable in the event you don’t want the extra material (and if the hood isn’t necessary that day), and the belt can be buckled or tied. All the checkboxes were marked for me! Quick fit note, I ordered one size up from my usual so I could layer underneath for any season and comfortably button the coat all the way up if needed.
The double-breasted front encloses with buttons on the inside and outside to maintain a fitted look while also keeping the rain out. On the collar, a metal hook and overlay fabric with button are designed to keep you completely dry if the rain starts to really come down.
I am smitten with this trench/rain coat if you can’t tell. The only unfortunate news? It’s not currently available, but I will keep you posted if and when it pops back up! However, the good news is that there is a very similar coat available on Burberry’s website.
In light of various appetites for investment pieces, I pulled a few other options below:
These Boots are Made for Splashing
One last item for wet weather that we must discuss is rain boots. My prior rain boots had a hole or a large tear, if we’re being honest, in them that I discovered during a storm. 😳 At the same time I bought the trench, I finally broke down and ordered Hunter boots to complete my rainy day activities.
Due to my calf width, the knee high version doesn’t work for me (not to mention they are incredibly heavy), so I opted for the short height. My shin does get a little wet if it is pouring, but that’s okay with me because I can’t walk properly in the tall version and I am not planning to walk through any bogs for now so the lower coverage works. They come in all sorts of colors and I chose black at the time for versatility, but when I need to replace them someday I will opt for a fun and festive color like pink, yellow, or aqua to brighten up a rainy (or snowy/slushy) day.
What are your rainy day must have items?
