Happy Tuesday everyone! This week’s edition of Try it on Tuesday has a sprinkling of items from clothing to accessories and the pieces are coming from a variety of sources. I hope this week’s session inspires you to see more versatility with the clothing in your closet from work to weekend.

Let’s take a look!

Amazon Nightgown Dress

People have been talking about this dress, it’s making its way around fashion blogs and Instagram like wildfire. I was going to order it when the discussion started, but then looked at it and thought – nah, this dress won’t fit me well. Then it went out of stock, perfect – decision made. But then I saw it was back in stock and I decided that I might as well order it, try it on, prove to myself that it wouldn’t fit and then I could return it.

Hmmm, I think I like it. What?! That was so unexpected! Try something new, you might surprise yourself!

I prefer it belted because it does hang very loosely and the sleeves can be worn down or pushed up since they have a loose elastic hem. There are two ties at the neckline and I have the bottom one tied tightly (and I may just sew it shut because I can’t imagine why you would want that open unless it is acting as a swimsuit coverup).

I love the colors of the dress and there are a total of fifteen different prints/colors to choose from on Amazon’s site so there is something for everyone! This would make a fantastic beach, summer, or vacation dress with sandals, flip flops, or espadrilles. I can easily see wearing this to the office as well with a belt, heels, or knee-length boots in the cooler months and it would pair well with a blazer or cardigan. The dress is not lined and does not have pockets, which are the only downsides I see.

However, for the price I think it is a great fit and very versatile. Personally, I think with a belt it is reminiscent of a Kate Middleton style. Perhaps we’ll see her in it next…in which case I recommend getting one sooner rather than later because the out of stock sign will be up faster than you can blink if that happens.

Navy and White Polka Dot Shirt

After cleaning out and re-organizing my closet this month, I decided to add two more button-down shirts (similar to the pink and white stripe one in this post). The first is this navy one with white polka dots. It’s great for the weekend or the office.

I have it paired with white jeans for a casual look, but it would also go great with standard denim washes or chinos. When the weather gets cooler, you can always layer on a cardigan for a weekend feel.

For work wear, the shirt can be worn under a suit, blazer, or cardigan. In this picture, I opted for a camel pencil skirt (the J.Crew No. 2 Pencil Skirts are my go to for this style) but you could also wear it with pants.

White Button-Down Shirt

This was the second button-down shirt I ordered from Amazon that I mentioned above. I realized that the one previously in my closet no longer fit….so, time to replace it. A white button-down shirt is a classic that will remain in your closet forever. This cotton one from Amazon is soft and comfortable and can be dressed up or down.

I have it underneath a classic black power suit from my corporate days but you could also wear it with a skirt and cardigan to work as well. For a more casual look, I paired it with jeans and pumps. But you could also opt for flats, booties, or whatever speaks to you in your casual style and makes you most comfortable. This shirt is forever in style and a closet staple.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM FOR TARGET BAG

I ordered this beauty from Target when they introduced the anniversary sale for different designer collaborations they have done over the years. It is the mid-size bag and it is a lovely purple color with plenty of room to fit everything you need for the day and even a tablet or small laptop (depending on what you have). There is also a small size in black and a larger size in a taupe color.

I’m a little like Goldilocks with handbags, not too large and not too small. Mid-size and this purple color are just right for me. This is also a bag I would carry from work to weekend without question. I have it paired with jeans and the white button-down shirt for a smart casual look and also in the next section with a work wear outfit for the office. I love the architectural structure of the bag too!

While the purple bag was part of a limited edition collection at Target and it is no longer available, this is just an example that any structured handbag will create a similar look and style to your wardrobe.   I am linking a few others that would be similar in style here, here, and the splurge of buying from the designer directly here.

Mad for Plaid

Plaid is in for this fall by way of pantsuits, blazers alone, pants, skirts, or shoes. I found this blazer on a sale rack at a local boutique so I don’t have an exact link for you. But here are some others in the general style from Talbots, Tory Burch, Madewell, 1 STATE, and LOFT.

We are also seeing longer blazers as a trend for this fall which makes it an option for a legging look.

I have it paired for casual wear with skinny jeans, a t-shirt, and booties. To flip it into a work outfit, I have it with the same pencil skirt and the Target bag from the section above. In the summer months, you could also even pair it with shorts and peep-toe booties for a dinner out.

I love the pink in this plaid, it feels very modern and feminine but with a structural masculine shape to the blazer.

Stella & Dot

Because I love this clutch so much, I’m sharing it with a try-on of the Vivre Le Reve t-shirt (translation “Live the Dream”) and Tres Bien Necklace. The t-shirt was created with Dress for Success and 20% of the proceeds will be donated to that charity organization by Stella & Dot when you purchase the t-shirt. It’s 100% cotton, so soft, and pairs easily with a necklace and/or blazer to dress it up or dress it down depending on your mood.

I love the message behind the t-shirt and knowing that a portion of the proceeds are going to help empower women in their success and development. The clutch is a new staple in my closet and I use it for both day and night, it’s roomy and goes with everything. You could also carry it in your work bag to take out with you during lunch or a meeting, the clutch would just easily slip into the bag to use later.

Have you noticed I love stripes yet? Well, if not. I’m here to tell you that I’ve never met a stripe I didn’t like. So between this clutch and the necklace, I was sold and I often wear them with a striped shirt. For me, there is no shortage of stripes that I can wear. But in all seriousness, it stripes on stripes are not your thing, the necklace easily pairs with a t-shirt, sweater, or button-down shirt.

Barrettes

Have you noticed the barrette trend everywhere? I ordered a set from Amazon and I am really enjoying this trend. The set I purchased came with pearl, tortoiseshell, and a pink/blue swirl combination. They are easy to slide into your hair and I found they stay in place. It just enough to add a little something extra to an outfit whether it is for work or the weekend, especially if you aren’t a jewelry person. This can be another great way of accessorizing.
